The Conversation: Part 1

So i read the book "The Conversation" by Hill Harper. A great read on how black men and women can have loving relationships with each other so that our kids grow up in single parent households. I had a dinner party at my house where i had a group of friends some married, engaged, dating, and some extremely single (me lol). IT sparked something great and i thought maybe i should continue this on a blog. This blog may become a series of things i right as i re read this book and talk about what i think. So Hill says that he believes that finding good relationships means first giving good love to yourself and that if we do that we will not settle for less than a righteous and fullfilling relationship. Which means its all a cirle, love is received and reciprocated and it all grows. Do you wonder if you love yourself enough to actually love someone else the right way? Is there a right or wrong way to love.
So as Hill is driving he looks in the mirror and really takes a look at himself. All along he has been blaming the world as a reason he is not in a relationship. This is what i have been doing so i decided i would talk a hard look at myself in the mirror and I saw pretty much the same thing. I blame me living in Memphis for my lack of relationships or that I dont go out or that i am a career woman and i dont have time for the shenanigans. In actuality none of those are really the problem, its all me not my circumstance. I had to realize i am apart of the problem and until i admitted that and decided i wanted to fix it, i would still be alone. So like Hill I am going to try and move forward.
if you think about it, the way you think and act could be defined by the family in which you were raised. Being raised by a single mother is definately different than being raised by two parents. Take me for instance. my mother and father have been together for almost 29 years, my aunt on my mother side has been in love with her husband since 15 and now has been married to him for almost 30 years, and thats how all my aunts and uncles are on both sides, not one of them has been divorced and re married well at least that i know of. I know what a loving relationship looks like yet at 27 (btw when most of them were married and working on their first kid) i have yet to be in a real commited relationship in almost 4 years. If you are asking yourself why, well so the hell am I? lol I am sure i have an idea, but lets move on from that. Well what they say now is that our generation is not willing to struggle, that we want to be defined in our careers before we make that leap into marriage. What happened with our generation that we strayed from the previous generation? The baby boomers took a leap not knowing which bill was going to get paid and yet made it work and the divorce rate for them isnt as high as it is for those born between 1970-1986. Whats up people? Whats the deal? Why do you think its so hard for black people to stay together?
I say lets keep this conversation going and try and fix the issues we have. What do ya say?!

The Reunion (Who the f#@K are yall)

This weekend was my five year reunion from Spelman! I so cant believe i have been out of school that long. I hooked up with my girls Jennifer and Saya. Talk about some crazy fun that was what we had. Friday night started off as a bust tho. We tried like 3 different places and all were wack. First we went to Twist..... Closed then Onyx............Brian had an altercation with the law...then the Velvet room. Did anyone know the Velvet Room in Atlanta is now in a strip mall next to a Big Lots? What a downgrade and they were trying to charge $20! Hell to the naw. That is not what you want in life in the ATL. Saturday we took a trip down memory lane and went to Howard Herald Hall our freshman dorm. Go Penthouse Northside!!!! As we were walking out these 2 alums told us a long time ago they looked like us lol. Come to find out they were from the class of 1950! They asked us what we were doing in life. Jen...Attorney...Saya...Med School....Mel...Business Owner....They were so proud and told us the only options they had were to be teachers or nurses and said they were proud that we were doing great things with our lives. As we walked to the new dorm on campus called the suites...might i add these students are living the life of luxury we ran into a girl who was from Memphis! YAY! She is a drama major with career aspirations to be a director! Spelmanites doing their thing. So we got a picture with the class of 1950 and the class of 2012. AMAZING. can you go somewhere else and have that kinda sisterhood! Love it!!!! Jen wanted me and Saya to go with her to meet up with her line sisters! talk about AWKWARD! After that shot of vodka i was straight. If i didnt know any better i think we could have been friends but some lines just cant be crossed lol!. Then we hit up FAB! Ran into some old friends took some pics drank with the boys! BTW my cousin Philip is now a published author! WTH! Crazy huh?! Check him out! The night ended with me in the bed sleep and Jen and Saya with the boys on the balcony having a great time! Sunday was brunch with the girls at Thumbs Up! Now as good as that place is they know they need to stop trying escape the IRS and take a damn debit card! that breakfast spud with chicken sausage was the BOMB tho! 5PM it was time to start the drive back to Memphis where my mother told my brother and me to stop and get us some food before we got home because my pregnant sister ate 4 times and ate all the damn chicken...Negros!!!!!!!!!!

My Hair

Ok so today is the day i get some more weave. I have been contemplating it becasue i actually like my hair cut, but i want something different. Soooo are bangs out for the season. Sure doesnt look like it, but since weave doesnt grow i dont suggest bangs. Ok so on to hair maintainence items. I just bought some kera care shampoo and conditioner and some nairobi foam. Havent tried it yet, but i wanted to try something new. I have been using Aveda shampoo and conditioner and i absolutely love it. After the wash i spray a little ic flat iron spray on my hair and blow it with a yellow bird blow dryer. That thing does WONDERS! Chi flat irons are by far the best at home flat iron ever invented. How do i know this, i have used them all! Now my co worker lives and dies for the carol's express gel to smooth down your edges so if you have one of those half wigs and need to lay it down try it, she swears glaze has a little too much water. Now i am no hair care expert but i have been in the industry for a while so hit me up if you want some advice!

The HGTV Makeover

Hey Everyone,

So thought i would start a blog and see how it goes. Clearly its going to be super random, but hopefully interesting nonetheless. So this weekend I went shopping for the house. I am trying to change it up HGTV style and switch up some colors and accent walls and turn my so called living room into a sitting room. BTW i found the most fabulous chandilier at Graham's Lighting on Macon Road. I will post a picture when i go back to pick it up. Also bought my first right hand ring! its gorgeous, young but yet very grown! found it 40% off at Mednikow on Perkins. So back to my house. What does everyone think about an accent wall being a honey gold color and the upstairs den being leaf green? my bedroom will have the wall behind the bed a martha stewart teal. I also looked at a front load washer and dryer. Dying to have one, but anyone have an opinion? So far i am leaning towards the GE. Its at Lowe's for about $550 or so. I am also thinking on the tall gold accent wall to do various size photographs of family. Any thoughts. Well i need to get my butt back to work before I get in trouble.
